About this test
Most of the common sexually transmitted infections are straightforward to treat once they have been identified, and many are curable outright. The visit covers the diagnosis, the treatment itself, and the two things people usually want to ask about and often do not: when it is safe to have sex again, and how to tell a partner. The doctor will raise both so you do not have to. If you were diagnosed elsewhere and want the treatment handled privately, that is a normal reason to come.
Who should get this test
- Anyone with a confirmed diagnosis, from here or anywhere else
- Anyone whose partner has been diagnosed and been told to get treated too
- Anyone with symptoms who wants the diagnosis and the treatment in one visit
- Anyone who started treatment somewhere else and it has not resolved
Symptoms to look out for
- Discharge, sores, ulcers or a rash you have already noticed
- Pain or burning when passing urine
- Pelvic, testicular or lower abdominal pain
- A partner has told you they have been diagnosed with something
- A positive result from a test taken elsewhere
Symptoms are not required for testing. Many infections are asymptomatic.
When to get tested
- As soon as you have a diagnosis or a symptom. Untreated infections do not usually resolve on their own, and some cause harm quietly.
- If a partner has been diagnosed, come even without symptoms — you can carry and pass on an infection while feeling completely well.
- Come back if a course of treatment has finished and something has not settled.
Preparation
- Bring any result or prescription you already have, including a photo of it on your phone.
- Tell the doctor about drug allergies and anything you are already taking.
- If a partner needs treating too, mention it — that can often be handled without you having to explain twice.
